Fendi has seen many changes over the last year and a half since the industry lost veteran designer Karl Lagerfeld. Silvia Venturini Fendi has expertly taken over the brand’s creative direction, continuing the trajectory of growth and expansion that Fendi has seen over the last few years. Now, a few seasons later, Venturini Fendi has introduced another collection that is all her own. And though these designs are new and fresh, they play off of many old favorites from the Lagerfeld era. This strategy is nothing new for Fendi, as the brand has been known to work off of existing shapes and silhouettes, using them as starting points to create stunning, seasonal novelty designs.
Silvia Venturini Fendi was inspired to create this collection after a period of time spent at home with family, which was a catalyst for reflection and introspection, as like many of us, Venturini Fendi watched the world go by. The result is an array of whimsical and romantic designs, seen through the brand’s RTW pieces as well as the accessories that were presented. A calming and quiet palette of natural hues like wheat, milk and honey make room for pops of color such as crimson red and pale pink.
The spring 2021 bags play on current silhouettes, though embroidered silk veils toy with a bag’s viewer, allowing the user of the bag to conceal or reveal. These intricate veils float over the iconic Fendi Baguette as well as the brand’s beloved Peekaboo. Various textures were used on existing silhouettes as well, such as floral fur, quilted leather, lattice work and woven basketweave.
Additionally, Fendi’s ‘hand in hand’ Baguette project celebrates a unique collaboration with local artisans across Italy. A sheer Fendi Baguette constructed of a stunning lace called tombolo aquilano sugar-coated lace was one of the show’s most beautiful designs. The technique was refined by Benedictine nuns, and dates back to the 15th century, while the woven Baguette was inspired by the baskets of local fisherman.
This collection was one of the most beautiful and thoughtful collections we’ve seen from Fendi in recent years, as the brand further moves away from its focus on logos. Instead, Fendi has gone back to its roots, returning to a focus on expert craftsmanship and attention to detail. View all of the bags below.[images via Fendi]
Originally invented as a tool to collect materials, store and transport loose food, the handbag has evolved into more than that, moving away from its technical function to become a fashion statement, a display of financial prowess and, arguably, the most important piece in a brand’s lineup, heavily relied upon to bring in sustained cash...
